September 11th should always be a day of remembrance for every American. I didn’t get to write a post last year as we were in hurricane mode without power. 17 years ago today, I was working in NYC. My kitchen and living room windows had a view of downtown that at one time was beautiful. That day, and the months that followed, will be burnt into my memory until I have no memory remaining.
We live in a moment in time where there are competing campaigns in progress that are meant to control what you see and how you perceive it. None of them are to be believed completely. We have to use our common sense and our bullshit filter to try and piece together what is really happening in the world we live in on a daily basis. Strangely enough, for me at least, a twenty one year old person you bump into on the street today will have little to no personal recollection of what happened on September 11th, 2001 as they were only 4 years old. It is our responsibility to remember, and to pass on what we saw to those that didn’t. Remember to talk…to actually talk…to each other. The younger generations live with their faces plastered to a smart phone. It is literally their access to the world. In a way, all of this technological connectivity tends to disconnect us from the human aspect of day to day community. Today is a day of remembrance. Lend your experience, your context, and your memories to someone that wasn’t born or old enough to understand what you saw. Do it face to face if you can.
Remember to thank our first responders and service members today. So many of the people from NYPD, NYFD, at the Pentagon, on the ground and in the skies gave their lives on September 11th and in the years following from what they experienced on that day. Our country is kept safe on the community level all the way up to the global level by all that serve. Remember to keep your eyes open and be skeptical of what you see. Americans eyes are a level of defense for our country.
