Security is a mindset…

Security is a mindset…

Good morning all.  There seems to be a noticeable increase in frequency and strategies of the attempts to rob and steal from honest people these days.  Whether it’s the string of extremely aggressive (broad daylight for one of them) armed robberies that have been taking place in the parking lots of hotels here in Boca Raton, or home burglaries that are perpetrated by people from outside of our city…there seems to be quite a bit of criminal activity that is taking on a desperate tone.  Desperation is dangerous.  Being observant and being skeptical of things that look out of the ordinary can help avoid some of these incidents.  Situational awareness is a great thing.  Be aware of where you are in the moment and what’s going on around you.  If you don’t know your neighbors, introduce yourself.  It’s harder to commit crimes in a neighborhood where you know your neighbors, than a block where a bunch of people that don’t care to know each other live next door.

In addition to all of the physical crimes being committed with greater frequency, there is also an unbelievable rise in fraud by telephone and by email.  While there may not be a gun in your face, you can still lose quite a bit from these attempted robberies.  The same observant and skeptical nature you would employ while out in the world should be applied to your unsolicited interactions with people by phone or email.  Your credit card company or bank will never send you an email with a scary subject line that asks you to fill in your information because of a security issue with your account.  No utility company will call you asking for your credit card number to avoid shutting down your utilities.  The IRS and the Florida Department of Revenue will never ask you to go fill out a money order and send it to a PO Box.  Always ask questions of these people that contact you by phone.  Try and get as much information out of them as they would like to get out of you…..and obviously give them nothing.  Take the information you get along with the phone number that these people are calling you from and call the police, or the utility company, or the bank, or credit card company that these people say they represent and report it.  On the email side of fraud, some of these emails look pretty convincing.  I received one this morning from “American Express” stating there was a security concern with my account.  You can see the email below:

While this may look convincing, it is a fraud.  Whether you are wandering around in the world, or sitting behind your computer at home…Be skeptical.  Be aware.  It’s sad that the world has come to this but being mentally soft in the wrong moment can cost you dearly.  Keep your eyes open out there.
