ATF Seminar and Private Party Transfer Background Checks…

 

Good morning all and Happy Friday!  Thanks for your understanding yesterday with the shop being closed.  These ATF Seminars are important for us as shop owners.  There was a lot of talk about compliance as expected since this business is really 90% compliance anyway.  There was a point brought to my attention that impacts you and can have a positive impact on our community.  It relates to the facilitation of background checks for private party transactions.  Over the years, many of you have come to me asking if I can help in this matter and up until this year the answer was no.  The 4473, or background check form, was changed this year to include the ability to handle private transactions.

I am not required to provide this service but I’m going to start it for those of you that are interested as it performs two functions.  It takes the stress out of a private transaction between two people that don’t know each other and it helps filter  out people trying to purchase weapons privately that shouldn’t have them.

Here’s how this will work.  Both parties to the transaction come to the shop.  I will run the seller’s weapon serial number through the FDLE Stolen Firearm database to see if it pings.  If it’s good, then I will give the buyer a background check form to complete.  If the buyer passes with immediate APPROVAL, the purchaser and seller compete their transaction and the purchaser leaves with the firearm.  The 5 business day wait (not including the day of the transaction in PBC) does not apply to private transactions.  Any DENIALS are exactly that.  As a side note, I’m not interested in dealing with any of the Conditional Non-Approvals in this situation as I don’t want to have to hold onto peoples weapons until that Conditional status clears or does not clear.  I’m only interested in the APPROVAL or DENIAL status on these which is exactly what the private party seller should be interested in.  The fee for these services is $25 per party to the transaction or $50 total.
